Hurrah For Small Local Bakeries
The sun was beating down on us on a Marvellous May Day In 2018; when the wonderful smell of fresh bread lead me to this fabulous Bakers.
They Are Famed For Their Lardy Cake.
What Is A Lardy Cake Charles?
Glad you asked, first let me explain the Chelsea Bun.
It is a yeast dough mix, with cinnamon and lemon and orange peel.
The mix is rolled on into a square then Butter and currents are spread over it, then it is rolled up and cut leaving it curled up. It is then bakes and given a sugar glaze. Love them.
For the lardy cake, rather than butter Lard is used and it is a larger wrap.
Above you can see both the cake and the slice. Not good for you eat them every day, but Wow Great Once in a While.
You don't often see them and to find such a fine one is a treat.
A Spot Of History
The Bun was invented by a baker in Chelsea in the 18th Century and was favoured by the Royal Family.
The Cake comes from Wiltshire; where the Bakery started back in 1958 and was a common treat in the West Country. Due to the Eat Healthy Campaigns of our time this delight is disappearing from the shelf. Not here though.
Try one, you will not be disappointed.
