#TheCharlesLloyd Visits Reeves The Baker Shaftesbury For A Lardy Cake

Hurrah For Small Local Bakeries

The sun was beating down on us on a Marvellous May Day In 2018; when the wonderful smell of fresh bread lead me to this fabulous Bakers.

They Are Famed For Their Lardy Cake.

What Is A Lardy Cake Charles?

Glad you asked, first let me explain the Chelsea Bun.
It is a yeast dough mix, with cinnamon and lemon and orange peel.
The mix is rolled on into a square then Butter and currents are spread over it, then it is rolled up and cut leaving it curled up. It is then bakes and given a sugar glaze. Love them.
For the lardy cake, rather than butter Lard is used and it is a larger wrap.
Above you can see both the cake and the slice. Not good for you eat them every day, but Wow Great Once in a While.
You don't often see them and to find such a fine one is a treat.

A Spot Of History

The Bun was invented by a baker in Chelsea in the 18th Century and was favoured by the Royal Family.
The Cake comes from Wiltshire; where the Bakery started back in 1958 and was a common treat in the West Country. Due to the Eat Healthy Campaigns of our time this delight is disappearing from the shelf. Not here though.
Try one, you will not be disappointed.

Marvellous Review Of The Little Matchgirl From The Buxton Opera House

The Best Theatrical Experience I Have Seen For Some Time

On A Cold March Evening In 2018 I Made My Way To The Buxton Opera House To Watch This Enchanting Performance.
As some of you may know I have had the privilege of working with puppets, puppeteers, actors and musicians. So to sit back in the beautiful Opera House and watch this finely crafted piece was a joy.
From the moment the lights went up the performers welcomed you into the well loved Hans Christian Anderson Tales. Both The Little Match girl and Her Puppeteer won our heart, the story teller had the auditoriums attention and we sat back and and let our imagination enjoy everything they had to share. The cast and musicians were chosen with skill and each one brought another layer to the story.
The set design was very well thought out and made a small space look vast. The lighting design complimented each scene and movement and the sound quality was superb. The direction I admired greatly and had subtle messages, that could have been seen as political, but given in a gentle back ground kind of way.
So when the inevitable happened to our Little Matchgirl at the end even the hardest of characters watching could not be left without a tear in the eye.

Here Is My Google Maps Review Of The Buxton Opera House

The more I go to the venue, the more I love it. Front of house they have many ushers to welcome you in, some are retired and do it for the Love and that shows.
It is in perfect condition just as it was when it was built.
Inside you will marvel on how beautiful the decorations are and wonder why we have plaster board and a thin layer of paint in the buildings of today.
Below is a Review I did on my Radio Blog. Have a read; it is:

The Windmill Pub Stoke On Trent

Well Done Greene King

Yes This Once Fading Pub Has Been Brought To Life Again.

Read My Google Maps Review Here

Always Worried When I Go Into A Managed House, But Was Pleasantly Surprised. Met With A Smile From The Staff. The Smell Of Fresh Paint Had Left, But Not The Fresh Look Of the Decor.
Everywhere Was Clean And Ready For A Busy Evening Of Which It Was.
You Have To Order at The Bar, But The Staff Bring Your Food To The Table. We Were Lucky as There Was No Staff Shortages Hurrah No Long Wait, Which Can Be Common In A Chain Outlet.
There Are Bar Games, TV's That Do Not Take Over The Atmosphere.
A Good Sized Pie, Not Hidden Under Chips And Veg; With Gravey On The Side. Marvellous.

Nice Selection Of Drinks, Soft Or Hard And A Reminder You Are In Stoke City Football Teams Area.
